“Nature must become an art and art a second Nature”  Novalis

Let us imagine a great snow-clad plain spread out before us and upon it here and there rivers and lakes hard frozen. The neighbouring sea is mostly frozen over close to shore; further out huge floes are drifting; occasional stunted trees and bushes lift heads heavy with snow and icicles. It is evening. The sun has already set, leaving behind the golden splendour of its afterglow.

Before our eyes are two female figures and out of the afterglow is born — we might say is sent forth — a messenger from the higher worlds, who stands before the women and listens with close attention to what they are telling of their inmost feelings and experiences.

One of the two standing there hugs her arms tightly to her body, cowers together, and exclaims: “I am freezing cold.” The eyes of the other woman wander over the snow-clad plain, out to the frozen waters and over the trees thick with hanging icicles, and from her lips burst forth the words “how glorious this whole landscape is.” She is utterly heedless of her own feelings, utterly oblivious to her physical suffering from the cold. We feel warmth streaming into her heart, for she has no attention to spare for her physical bodily discomfort, being inwardly overwhelmed by the wonderful beauty of this chill and frozen scene. Then the sun sinks further and further, the color fades out of the afterglow and the two friends fall into a deep slumber. One of them, the one who had been so acutely conscious of the cold in her bodily self, sinks into a sleep which might easily become fatal; the other sinks into a sleep in which we can recognise the influence of the emotion expressed in the words “How glorious,” which continues to warm her limbs and keep them full of life throughout her slumber. And she hears the youth who, born out of the glory of the afterglow, says to her these words, “Thou art Art”; and then she falls asleep.

With her she took into her slumbers all the results of the impressions made upon her by the landscape which has been described; and a sort of dream mingled with her sleep. And yet it was not a dream, but in a certain way a reality, although of a unique kind akin to dreaming in its form. It was the manifestation of a reality which this woman’s soul had barely been able to conceive before. For the experience that befell her was not a dream; it merely resembled one. That which she experienced may be described as “astral imagination.” And if we are to describe her visions we cannot do it otherwise than by setting forth in words the picture by means of which “imaginative” perception speaks.

For the soul of this woman became aware at that moment what the event signalised. By the words of the youth, “Thou art Art,” can be described intimately only by clothing the experiences of the imaginative perceptions in words. Accordingly let us thus clothe the impressions received by the soul of that woman through the channel of this imaginative percept.

1 // 25th-26th November, 2022 // Architecture: Forms Disappear in Forms

The landscape and the elements that shape it are reflected in the local architecture. A dialogue is created between periphery and centre, between landscape and architecture. With the perception of our senses we discover these relationships. Through eurythmic movement and modelling we evoke the possibilities of artistic research that pays special attention to form and space.

Painting is colour, light and darkness, form and emptiness, image and symbol, movement and rest. How can the unlimited, the eternal, the invisible be made visible in the world? Music awakens the deepest places of the human being and activates the vital forces and sensitivity. Strengthens community feeling and solidarity.

As an art that is sustained over time, music has a special relationship with the development and evolution of human life. The experience of the human organism as a musical instrument leads us to music as an experience of the spiritual. The human being is music in his whole being.

5 // April 21st-22nd, 2023 // Speech Art: Listen to the weaving of the forces

Through listening, reconnect with the vital force of sounds and discover the universal images that live in each word. The word is music, colour and form. These elements connect us with its artistic side.

Where does speech come from in humans? where does it originate? For speech to acquire a level of art, it is necessary that the forming activity of sounds be raised to consciousness.

The word originates from the artistic side of the human being, not from the intellect. In the beginning it was the verb, the logos, the word.

6 // May 26th-27th, 2023 // Eurythmy: Revealing the Invisible

The art of Eurythmy makes the sound of speech and song visible. When a person expresses what lives in his soul through language, song or music, he commits himself with his whole being. In a certain way, he has the tendency to move with his whole body, but he does not carry this tendency to expression, he retains this movement and concentrates it in the organs of speech or song. It is possible to recognize the tendency of internal movement and reveal the invisible through the movement of the human organism. This movement is the Art of Eurythmy.

SUTDY TRIP — THE 7 ARTS IN DIALOGUE — Bring light into the calm

July 5th -10th, 2023. Goetheanum, Dornach, Suiza

About a century ago, the first Goetheanum was born as a transforming and active impulse of society. Visiting and contemplating the Goetheanum nourishes the path of the human being through the arts and brings to light new contents and forms of expression, becoming an inspiring movement for artists and architects. The old values disappear and new techniques, inner needs and existential questions arise.

The visit to the Goetheanum has the objective of experiencing the 7 arts in a contemporary dialogue.

page6image8002512

It rises on the slopes of Dornach in Switzerland and is admirable both for its immensity and its design. This concrete temple, which does not have any right angles, is a living and dynamic representation of the 7 arts in dialogue. It is the seat of the Free Higher School for Spiritual Science, a movement founded in 1912 by Rudolf Steiner, called the Goetheanum in the honor of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
